Previously I have worked in a larger Federation and inner-city schools in the Leeds Authority.

I am relentless in my pursuit for school improvement, ensuring high quality education in small rural primary schools so that village schools and their communities have an aspirational and challenging curriculum and an extensive programme of enrichment activities.

I am passionate about ensuring outstanding personal development for all children during their primary years; assisting the whole school community to understand Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs / Special Education Needs and Disabilities so that our schools can truly be inclusive and caring places for children to flourish.

I am an advocate for helping children and adults to understand how the brain develops and works, and as an Accredited Emotion Coaching UK Organisations, we use specific strategies and Trauma Informed Approaches to support all children.

I have led training for Senior Leaders in IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) on Assessment for Learning and was part of the LEAF Leadership Trust (Love, Enterprise, Aspiration, Faith) completing research projects regarding the tracking of pupil progress in order to secure improved outcomes.

As Executive Headteacher across five, village primary schools, I have played a leading role in rapid, school transformation resulting in schools, previously judged as Inadequate and Requires Improvement, achieving ‘Good’ judgements in short, time frames. I am wholly committed to the future sustainability of small, rural schools.

For the last four years, I have been relentless in ensuring these village schools and their communities have the same quality curriculum enrichment and opportunities that other, larger education settings have and developing the relationship between the pupils and staff in the federation. I am passionate about how the brain develops and using Emotion Coaching strategies to support children with trauma and SEN needs so that they can truly flourish. In December 2022 the Federation earned the status as a Trauma Aware Setting.

I am the head teacher of Springwater School which is situated in Starbeck. The school is a special school with over one hundred pupils on roll. Pupils ages span from nursery through to sixth formers who leave us at the age of nineteen in most cases. I have been head teacher here for eight years.

Prior to headship I have worked in a wide range of local authorities – mostly in senior posts within specialist provisions. This includes Birmingham, Solihull, Wakefield and York! My initial degree sounds a bit old fashioned now but has served me well as it was a specialist teaching degree in severe learning difficulties.

I am passionate about the pupils in the local area receiving a high-quality offer tailored to their specific needs and am excited about the wide range of developments and improvements which are supporting schools and provisions in this locality. Specialist provision is an exciting place to work, but I know that for many children and young people it is essential for them to remain in the local communities and the schools there amongst friends, peers and siblings. The work of the locality board seeks to ensure an offer for all pupils with additional needs as part of a matrix of support. My personal interest is in promoting the development of sufficient targeted mainstream provision within the locality so that more children and young people can access provision which meets their needs situated in their local communities.” photo_width=”189px” photo_alignment=”center” content_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” border_radii_photo=”on|8px|8px|8px|8px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/bapro_team_carousel_child][bapro_team_carousel_child photo=”https://localityboardsnorthyorks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Kathryn-Stephenson.webp” member_name=”Kathryn Stephenson ” job_title=”Headteacher Boroughbridge High School ” short_bio=”I am Headteacher of Boroughbridge High School, which is federated with King James’s School, having worked in three community secondary schools in County Durham, York and North Yorkshire. I have led science departments in schools in some of the most deprived areas of Leeds, and I’ve led my departments to excellence.

I was also part of an action research group researching links between poverty, aspiration, and how schools can increase attendance and engagement in learners. Our team’s findings were published in Urban Review.

After leading a science department in mainstream schools, I made the move to alternative settings, taking on the role of Lead Teacher of science at the Grove Academy. I ensured excellent outcomes for students and led the school in teaching and learning. In this role, I worked collaboratively with the British Council and Albanian education leaders in sharing best practice as Assistant Principal with responsibility for teaching, learning, and curriculum. I also developed the online provision, behavior tracking, and intervention planning for the school.

In January 2021, I became head of the center and developed a curriculum focusing on moving students to their next destinations, ensuring a personalized curriculum is in place to support their transition. A fully relational approach underpins all aspects of Springwell Harrogate, and I am keen to share this approach.
